Hayden Tract & Culver City Arts District
Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook Trail
As punishing to the butt as it is rewarding to the eye, this strenuous hike has been called "The Stairway to Heaven." On clear days, the 342-foot climb in 1.25 miles affords fantastic views of the city and ocean. Nature-lovers and fitness-buffs drive from all over the Westside to get here, but this state park is in your backyard. The top is also accessible by car and is a great place to watch sunsets and fireworks. Starchitects
The building's second story affords views of the handiwork of Culver City's starchitects. To the southeast is Eric Owen Moss's Samitaur Tower, the Hayden Tract's best-known landmark. In fact, the whole district is Moss's playground. Other quirky classics include the Stealth, the Beehive and Vespertine. "There is a compelling energy to these odd angles," The New Yorker wrote in a 2010 article about Moss's work in the tract. And Moss isn't the only celebrated architect represented in the area. The L.A. offices of Morphosis, the firm founded by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Thom Mayne, are located two lots behind the building. |
